Quilts for Every Season: Understanding GSM and Choosing the Right Quilt
Your quilt is one of the most important pieces of bedding when it comes to regulating your body temperature and ensuring a restful night’s sleep. Choosing the right quilt for each season can be the key to staying comfortable as the weather changes. One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a quilt is the GSM (grams per square meter), which refers to the weight of the quilt’s filling. The GSM of a quilt helps determine its warmth level and how suitable it is for different seasons. What is GSM? GSM is a measure of the density of the quilt filling, which directly correlates to the quilt's warmth and insulation properties. A higher GSM means the quilt is filled with more material and provides greater warmth, while a lower GSM indicates a lighter quilt that’s more suited to warmer weather. Understanding GSM helps you choose the right quilt to match the climate and your personal preferences, ensuring you sleep comfortably all year long. Winter Quilts – High GSM for Maximum Warmth In the colder months, you want a quilt that will keep you warm and insulated while still allowing for breathability. A high-GSM quilt typically ranges from 400-600 GSM, with some even going higher, depending on the material and fill. These quilts are filled with more material, which traps heat and provides excellent warmth. Quilts with high GSM are perfect for winter, as they provide the necessary insulation to maintain body warmth without making you feel overly hot. Natural Fill Options: For winter, quilts filled with natural materials like alpaca or wool are often favoured for their ability to regulate temperature and provide warmth without bulk. Synthetic Fill Options: If you're looking for a synthetic option, polyester fill quilts with higher GSM are a great choice. These quilts provide ample warmth and are more affordable than down-filled quilts, making them an excellent option for budget-conscious buyers. Summer Quilts – Low GSM for Lightness and Breathability In the warmer months, a low-GSM quilt (typically ranging from 150-300 GSM) is more appropriate. Quilts with a lower GSM are lighter, breathable, and less insulating, allowing heat to escape while still providing just enough coverage for comfort during the night. With a low-GSM quilt, you can enjoy the benefits of a light, airy feel that won't leave you sweating in the heat. Natural Fill Options: Look for quilts with cotton or Tencel® fills for summer. These materials are naturally cool, lightweight, and breathable, making them ideal for warm weather. Synthetic Fill Options: If you're looking for a synthetic option, microfibre quilts with low GSM are a good choice for summer. Microfibre is soft, lightweight, and cool to the touch Transitional Seasons – Medium GSM for Versatility Spring and autumn bring fluctuating temperatures, which means you need a quilt that offers versatility. A medium-GSM quilt (usually around 300-400 GSM) is ideal for these transitional months. Quilts with a medium GSM provide the perfect balance of warmth and breathability, adapting to the changing temperatures and allowing you to sleep comfortably whether it's chilly at night or a little warmer. Natural Fill Options: A wool-filled quilt with medium GSM works wonderfully during these in-between seasons, as wool can regulate temperature. It keeps you warm when it's cool and allows for ventilation as temperatures rise. Choosing the Right GSM for Your Quilt For Winter: Look for quilts with a high GSM (400-600+) for warmth and insulation, choosing natural fills like down, alpaca or wool, or synthetic options like polyester fill for added affordability. For Summer: Opt for quilts with a low GSM (150-300) that are breathable and lightweight, made from materials like cotton, Tencel®, or microfibre to keep you cool and comfortable through hot nights. For Spring and Autumn: Select a medium-GSM (300-400) quilt to provide versatility, with options like wool, Ingeo or polyester that offer just the right amount of warmth and ventilation for fluctuating temperatures. Choosing the right quilt for each season is key to staying comfortable year-round. A higher GSM provides cosy warmth for winter, while a lower GSM ensures breathability in the warmer months. Having multiple quilt options lets you adapt easily to changing weather. Don’t forget to consider the material—whether you prefer natural fibres like wool, alpaca cotton, Tencel, or Ingeo, or synthetic ones like polyester and microfibre. The perfect quilt guarantees restful sleep, no matter the season.

Understanding Thread Counts
UNDERSTANDING THREAD COUNT (AND WHY, UNFORTUNATELY, HIGHER ISN’T BETTER) In recent years the term ‘thread-count’ has become synonymous with the process of buying bedding – in particular sheets, quilt covers, pillowcases etc. We’ve all been led to believe that the higher the thread count, the better the quality of the product. But is this really true – or is it a well executed marketing exercise? What exactly is thread count? Put simply, thread count is the amount of threads woven together in a square inch. It is worked out by counting the lengthwise (warp) threads, and then the width-wise (weft) threads. Once counted, the amount of weft threads and warp threads are added together to form the thread count. (E.g. a fabric with 100 warp threads and 100 weft threads is said to have a thread count of 200). How can thread count be misunderstood? There are two main reasons why thread count has become overused and misunderstood: The first is that it is the quality of the fibre – the yarn size, the finishing and the construction – which really matters. An inferior fabric with a thread count of 800 is going to be of lesser quality than a superior fabric with a thread count of 300. The second, and most important, reason is that some rather unscrupulous manufacturers use ‘creative maths’ to boost their thread counts. “Its is all about inflating the thread count to inflate the price tag,” according to Consumer Reports (an independent, not for profit organization). “If a product states that it has a 1,200 thread count, be very wary, since fitting 1,200 threads into a square inch is actually bordering on the impossible. In the spirit of free enterprise and competition, manufacturers battle to calculate their thread counts high, higher and highest. They count not just each thread, but each fibre (called plies) that make up each thread. So a single thread might be four plies twisted, or braided, together. One manufacturer will call that one thread, while another manufacturer will call it four threads”.As proof of this, Consumer Reports hired an independent textile lab to count the threads in a $280 queen sheet set with a manufacturer-stated thread count of 1,200. The lab counted 416 threads per inch… just 35 percent of what was claimed. Because thread count is a scientific term, and there are strict standards surrounding it, the US National Textile Association requested the US Federal Trade Commission become involved in the thread count issue. As a result of this, in 2008 a major US chain that operates in Australia was sued for mispresenting thread counts on their Egyptian sheet products. Why can high-thread count sheets feel clammy? Another issue many people don’t realise is that the higher the thread count, the hotter or clammier the sheets will be on a warm summer’s night. The reason for this comes down to simple maths: if a sheet has a thread count of 500 (i.e. it has 500 threads per square inch) the threads are extremely close together and allow for almost no air to pass through the fabric, affecting the breathability of the product.Breathability is recognised by sleep experts as one of the most important factors in getting a great nights sleep. If your bedding products allow air flow you get a much healthier, more restful night’s sleep. What should I look for in sheets then? Experts agree that a thread count of between180-300 is best for bedding. However, the best advice we can give is to purchase linen by feel, not by thread pedigree. Bed linen should be soft, breathable, wrinkle free, easy-care and have good drape. For those interested in purchasing bedding that has these attributes, but is also kind to the environment, it would be worthwhile considering Bambi’s TENCEL® bedding. TENCEL®, which is made from plantation fibre (Eucalyptus pulp), has a thread count of 275 which gives the fabric excellent breathability. In addition, the production of TENCEL® uses a fraction of the world’s precious water resources when compared to cotton. Bambi’s TENCEL® products wick 50% more moisture than cotton meaning they stay dry and cool all night long. They also hold 2000 times less bacteria than synthetics and a whopping 200 times less bacteria than cotton sheets, which makes them perfect for anyone interested in a healthy night’s sleep, but most particularly babies and anyone with sensitive skin. Bambi produce many TENCEL® products including pure TENCEL® Sheets, Separates, Quilt Covers and Quilts as well as Pillows and Mattress Protectors. Please check out our website for more information. 10 Reasons You Need To Invest In A Mattress Protector TENCEL – The latest ‘Must Have’ Fibre Said to be softer than silk, more absorbent than cotton, and cooler than linen, TENCEL® is being proclaimed as the latest ‘must- have’ fibre. So what is TENCEL®, and why is it taking centre-stage in the world of sleep? Here we take a look at what makes this textile so unique. Eco-friendlyWhile many fibres claim to be environmentally friendly, TENCEL® goes above and beyond. Made from the wood pulp of sustainable tree farms, TENCEL® can be grown on marginal land (i.e. land that cannot sustain crops or farming), is fully recyclable, and 100% biodegradable. Produced via an advanced ‘closed loop’ spinning process which uses non-toxic solvent, it has minimal impact on the environment and is highly economical in the use of energy and water. In fact, when compared to cotton, the fibre yield from TENCEL® is almost ten times higher per acre, and the cultivation process uses an incredible 10-20 times less water. (And that has to make for a healthier environment). As well as being eco-friendly, TENCEL® has a number of advantages that very few fibres feature – and certainly not all in one fibre. Moisture Absorption: TENCEL® has incredible moisture absorption and wicking properties and in fact wicks 50% more moisture than cotton. But what does this really mean and how does it impact the way we sleep? Well, firstly, it allows us to sleep in a dry, cool environment. With cotton or other bedding fibres, sleepers often report waking up in damp sheets. This happens because, like it or not, we lose nearly 1 litre of fluid a night into our bedding. With TENCEL®, this moisture doesn’t soak into the fabric – instead it wicks into the atmosphere, leaving the sheets completely dry. Secondly, because TENCEL’s absorption and wicking is so effective, TENCEL® is almost incapable of holding bacteria. Proven in tests to hold 2000 times less bacteria than synthetics and 200 times less than cotton, allergy and asthma sufferers and anyone with sensitive skin can be assured that this fabric is about as healthy as it gets. And finally, this moisture wicking gives a naturally cool feel to the fibre, making it an excellent choice for hot sleepers, babies and toddlers. Silky-Smooth: There are few people who could touch TENCEL® and not be impressed by its incredibly soft, luxurious feel. Made possible by very fine hairs found on the outer fibres of the fabric, TENCEL® feels like silk and has a wonderful drape. (And as an added benefit for people wh Easy-Care. It would be easy to believe that a fibre that sounds as delicate and sophisticated as TENCEL® might need special care. But in fact, the opposite is true. TENCEL® is surprisingly durable , and authentic TENCEL® products are also odourless, pre¬ shrunk, and can be machine washed and tumble-dried. When washing, there’s not even a need for fabric softener or whitening agents – which helps in further saving our precious planet. 10 Reasons You Need To Invest In A Mattress Protector

Why do I need a Mattress Protector? As a general rule, if you have a mattress, you need a mattress protector. This is not only to protect it from stains, but also from dust mites, allergens, bacteria and mold. Also, regardless of the material, your mattress is made from, the most important factor is that your mattress should never come into contact with moisture. When moisture enters a mattress, mold and mildew can form, leading to the growth of nasty, and often harmful, bacteria. Unfortunately, many people are not aware that moisture is not only caused by spills and upsets but also occurs naturally in the body every night. In fact, on average, a person will lose almost ½ litre of fluid a night which soaks straight into the mattress. Naturally, when two people are sleeping, this goes up to nearly a litre – meaning your mattress is soaking up in excess of 350 litres of perspiration every year. In addition to this, a mattress protector will also guard against dust mites that flourish in mattresses. They thrive on shredded/dead skin – and considering we lose almost 600,000 particles of skin an hour, that’s a lot to flourish on. What is the best way to protect my mattress? For the reasons stated above, a good quality waterproof mattress protector is the ideal way to protect your mattress and in turn, your family. Our Bambi waterproof protectors utilise the highest quality materials available, making them whisper quiet, safe and comfortable. How do Bambi Mattress Protectors stay on? Many inferior mattress protectors are simply attached to the mattress with elasticated bands. This means the protector will slip around or even come adrift completely whenever there is movement on the mattress. However, you can rest assured this won’t happen with a Bambi Mattress Protector since our products feature a tightly fitted skirt which keeps the protector securely in place all night long. What are the benefits of Quilted Mattress Protectors? Quilted mattress protectors help to hold the interior fibre in place and prevent the occurrence of uneven padding. They also add extra cushioning and support to the sleeper while allowing natural breathability. What about warranties? All of our mattress protectors have product warranties which guarantee the quality and durability of the product. In addition, our Protectiva Luxury Tencel protector, our Protectiva fully encased protector and our Tencel Health Assurance packs all come with a 10 year mattress replacement warranty, meaning that if you buy your mattress protector at the same time as the mattress, we cover your mattress surface against stains for 10 years. Our Cotton Health Assurance Pack has the same warranty but for a period of 5 years. Understanding Thread Count Which Bambi Waterproof Protector is best for me? If you are interested in a waterproof pillow protector, consider the Protectiva Bamboo/Cotton Towelling or Stretch-Knit protectors, or the 100% Bamboo pillow protector. Non-waterproof pillow protectors are also available. How do I care for my Mattress Protector? To ensure your mattress stays clean and fresh for many years, simply follow these two simple care instructions:Always ensure you don’t sleep directly on the protector; instead cover with sheets so that you add an extra layer of protection from tears, burns and severe spills. The less the protector is exposed to external elements, the longer it will last.If a spill or upset does occur, the protector should be cleaned straight away to prevent staining. Hot Sleeper? Consider this: Layer your Bedding. Every night our bodies lose moisture . The cause of this could be medical, environmental, temperature or the use of certain materials on the bed. Tip 1 covered mattress protectors. Tip 2 looks at sheets, Pillowcases and Quilt covers. Sheets – When it comes to thread counts ‘more’ is not necessarily better for you. There are many technical arguments for and against high thread counts which can be researched elsewhere. As a general rule, the higher the thread count the lower the breathability of the sheet. Less breathability can exacerbate excessive heat in the bed, . Thread counts of good quality sheets of around 350 – 400 should be considered. How to Choose the Best Mattress Topper Sheets are available in the market in a wide variety of fabrics from Microfibre (polyester) Poly/Cotton (a blend of polyester and cotton) Cotton, Tencel. Man made polyester fibres when used in sheeting, are affordable and durable but as with most polyester based products they do not breath very effectively. Tencel sheets provide excellent moisture dispersion and the fibre has natural anti allergy properties. They are the only sheets to be accepted into the Asthma councils Sensitive Choice programme. Pillowcases – If you purchase design Quilt cover sets which include Pillowcases, be aware of the material. Many of these items are made from Polyester or a blend of Polyester and cotton (even the expensive ones). If you are using the design Pillow case as your main pillow consider that your head and face may be in contact with polyester throughout the night. Not ideal if you are a hot sleeper. Hot Sleeper? Consider this: Layer your Bedding. Every night our bodies lose moisture . The cause of this could be medical, environmental, temperature or the use of certain materials on the bed. Actual Moisture loss quantities vary and are debated. Some suggestions are up to 1 litre a night but we suggest you conduct your own research if you need to quantify this. The causes and implications of moisture loss are connected to the different conditions which exist in our bodies or our bedroom. Much of the moisture will find its way into your bedding and ultimately your mattress itself. Check your pillow, sheets and mattress for yellowing. if they are then that’s usually caused by moisture . Moisture in bedding can contribute to the growth of bacteria which in turn could exasperate allergies in some people. In addition moisture can also be one of the factors exacerbating ‘Hot Sleeping’ experiences. We recommend the selection of material in your bedding which will disperse moisture away from your body. Consider your current bedding and work from the mattress up. Select a waterproof protector with a natural fibre upper layer (the waterproof layer should be in contact with your mattress). The waterproof layer is almost always a Polyester based product, currently the best material to create a moisture barrier. Where possible add an additional quilted protector layer. These are also Mattress Protectors but do not have a waterproof component. This item is normally filled and covered with Cotton or Tencel for improved breathability and will act as a barrier between your body and the waterproof component. Where possible try to minimize the use of Polyester based or filled products. These are man made fibres and whilst low cost, they do not disperse moisture as well as natural fibres do.
